VIDEO: Service Learning Partnership with Industrial & Interaction Design

By Patrick Linehan |

This video was created in partnership with the Shaw Center and Assistant Professor Dianna Miller of the Industrial and Interaction Design program in the School of Design. In collaboration with Laurel Morton, the Shaw Center Transportation Coordinator, Miller taught a hands on research class with the Shaw Center acting as their client. The students conducted research on the Shaw Center’s transportation initiative, talking to Shaw Center interns, bus riders, and bus drivers.

I filmed this video half-way through the semester as the students started to create user profiles and journey maps. I filmed the class in their classroom studio. Students sorted the data they gathered on charts that they had taped to the wall.

Design students reflected on the project, showing how hands-on experiences can heighten learning for all. The students also understand how the work they are doing helps the community. The Shaw Center transports over 700 students every year to do engagement work, and the research these students are doing will help to increase that number.

I would like to thank Erica Jules, Ricardo Sanchez, Gokul Beeda, and Emiri Vithoontien for sharing their perspective and the entire class for allowing me to film as they worked.

This video was produced, filmed, and edited by me, Patrick Linehan.
