Last semester, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University selected Ruth Bang and Scott Mueller as the 2021 Whitman Class Marshals to represent the senior class throughout the academic year.

As marshals, Bang and Mueller serve as student representatives on the Whitman Undergraduate Board, help coordinate the 2021 Whitman Convocation and dedicate the Class of 2021 gift to the Whitman School. They will also work alongside the University’s other college marshals and the Class of 2021 University’s Senior Class Marshals Paige Koss and Alaba Anna Tam Danagogo (A&S).

Both dedicated and involved student leaders in organizations such as Delta Sigma Pi, Whitman Student Ambassadors and Goodman IMPRESS Program peer mentors, Bang and Mueller are honored to represent their entire class and make a difference for students who will come after them. They are also eager to gain more exposure to faculty and administrators and hope to work closely with them on issues that directly impact Whitman’s students.

Ruth Bang ’21

From Parkland, Florida, Bang is a marketing management and supply chain management double major, who originally shied away from leaving the Sunshine State. Once she considered colleges outside of her comfort zone, she realized Syracuse University would make for the perfect home away from home.

“Syracuse offered me everything I wanted for the next chapter of my life,” says Bang. “Whitman cultivated the perfect environment for me to grow. Even at a large University, it offered a smaller community that was always putting my best interests in mind.”

After almost four years at Syracuse University, Bang has worked at several internships in e-commerce, received the MIT Supply Chain Excellence Award and made countless memories in her extracurricular activities, such as her positions as a tutor and leadership intern with Balancing the Books, a program partnership among the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public Community Service, the Whitman School and the Syracuse City School District (SCSD).

“Truthfully, I don’t have an exact roadmap for how the next few years of my life will pan out. But, I also hope that, regardless of where I am, I will always represent Syracuse University, my mentors, friends and family in the best of ways,” she says.

Scott Mueller ’21 (WHIT/iSchool)

A finance major at the Whitman School and information management and technology minor at the School of Information Studies, Mueller was eager follow his father, who attended Syracuse University, after hearing about the unmatched school spirit, the passionate Orange alumni network and endless chances for students to get involved.

Originally from Ogdensburg, New Jersey, Mueller sought out every opportunity at the Whitman School, particularly those that involved mentorship. In the past four years, he has served as a lead peer mentor for the IMPRESS Marshall House, a peer facilitator for SEM 100, a lead student ambassador for Whitman’s undergraduate admissions and several leadership positions in Delta Sigma Pi, one of the Whitman School’s professional business fraternities.

“I want to make a positive impact on the Whitman School and help empower every student,” says Mueller. “I hope to help first-year students have the best start to their college careers, help upperclassmen leave a lasting legacy and connect alumni with students in new and innovative ways.”

Looking forward to commencement, Bang and Mueller are indebted to their valuable experience at the Whitman School and hope to leave a lasting legacy for others to follow.

“I hope together we can serve as a resource for our peers and our school, so that we can create an amazing year for everyone,” says Bang. “During such difficult times, I hope that every student feels important, heard and excited for all this year and graduation has to offer.”
