Balancing the Books (BTB) — a collaboration among the Mary Ann Shaw Center for Public Community Service, the Martin J. Whitman School of Management (WSM), and the Syracuse City School District (SCSD) —was established in 1997. Volunteer tutors from WSM commit a minimum of one year to working with a consistent cohort of middle school and high school students at Huntington and Henninger. Tutors work with students on financial literacy, reading, writing, mathematics, and other skills that are necessary to help students achieve their goals in school and after graduation. This initiative cultivates civic skills among WSM students and leverages the knowledge and skills of WSM students to incorporate mutually beneficial experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum.

    •  Completion of two academic semesters of BTB fulfills approximately 35 WSM service hours.
    • Please download the application form: Balancing Books Application. Completed forms can either be emailed to LitInits@syr.edu or handed in to the Shaw Center at 111 Waverly Avenue, Suite 102.
Every year BTB hosts students on campus for day.
